Have you ever wondered how composers are able to emotionally impact us with their music? In this video, I explore the incredible trumpet solo from Adam Rapa in the Rahman composition, “Tu Bole” – firstly by analysing the underlying chord progression, and secondly, by dissecting the solo itself.

On a side note, I am no musical expert/professional. I am simply a music lover, who uses his experiences from learning, presenting, and listening to music, in order to create content. I am sure that many of the viewers of this video may know more about music than me. Plus, of course, many of the conclusions I reach in the video are just my personal interpretations. This is an “analysis” after all, so it will include my personal interpretations of what I hear. Please feel free to let me know if I’ve made any mistakes or am misled in any way.   1. I enjoyed every minute of both videos! Great analysis.

    You seem to suggest that the solo was written based off of the chords for each measure. Is this a common practice? I always thought that the chords come last.

    Re the video setup, I was straining to read the notations on the left; it would be better to perhaps sacrifice some of your own real estate to the notations…? 🙂

    You mention “the idea of starting a phrase a little earlier than expected” (in measures 13-16) — is that the same as syncopation? Or does it have to be more consistent (repeated multiple times) for it to be qualified as syncopation?

      Regarding your first point: yes, this is common practice, particularly in jazz! Solos in jazz are generally improvised, and the improviser creates their melodies based on the chord structure that the composer has set. So generally, with improvisations, the chords come first, and the improvised melody comes afterwards.

      Regarding your second point, noted! Let me know if you’d like a PDF version of the trumpet score I notated, and I can send that over if it would be easier to see.

      Regarding your third point – yes, this is a form of syncopation! It does not need to be repeated multiple times to be considered syncopation.
